Ever wondered where does all the rubbish we create daily goes? It’s a big problem because we make so much waste, and if we simply toss it out in landfills, it can hurt the environment. Rather than simply dispatching it to landfills, savvy scientists have discovered pragmatic and quasi-alchemical methods of converting this waste to usable energy. Two of these processes are biomass gasification, and they help us to better use our garbage.

Both gasification and pyrolysis are processes for breaking down waste products — such as wood chips, leftover food, and any other type of garbage — into usable energy. Gasification heats the waste in a low-oxygen environment — in a place called a gasifier. This heating of the waste produces a gas called syngas. The syngas can then be used to assist in the generation of the energy that fuels our homes and education centers. Pyrolysis, on the other hand, is a slightly different process in that it heats the waste without any oxygen addition. This process leads to the production of many useful products like char, oil, and gas. We can use the oil and gas that is produced from pyrolysis to heat our homes, or generate electricity similar to the syngas produced from gasification.
