Gasification and pyrolysis are two processes that Prabir Basu, Professor of Chemical Engineering with the Faculty of Engineering at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia is studying. These are unique techniques to convert plants into energy. Gasification occurs when plants are heated in a near-absence of oxygen. It produces an energy gas that we can use. Pyrolysis, on the other hand is one of a kind. It is when plants get hot in presence of much oxygen. The plants are converted to liquids and gases, which also can be used as energy. These are really interesting ways and point out to us that we can work with plants in the generation of energy.
Prabir Basu states that he is determined to explore new possibilities when it comes to producing environmentally advanced energy. The reason we must look for a new energy source is because everything else that we are currently using as an energy resource, oil and coal etc. will either expire or run out soon so need something sustainable to rely on in future. That is why the idea of using biomass — plants. If so, what does it matter if a plant needs to be re-grown when we can grow them over and again? As someone who has dedicated vast amounts of time on figuring out how to turn plants into energy, Prabir Basu is very creative. He is always seeking vetter ways to achieve this. He even figured out a way to burn waste plants, or plant garbage as fuel. That is significant because it could allow power to be generated with old plants normally thrown in the waste or landfills. In addition to reducing waste, this also allows us to make energy. Prabir Basu is experimenting with alternative plant materials too, such as algae to determine whether they can be beneficial in producing energy for us. Algae are small water plants that grow rapidly and in many cases could be a promising source of energy.
